Polish Folk Art
I really like a lot of the Polish folk art that can be seen all over the country. One of the most interesting themes that you frequently come across, though, is the “pensive Jesus.” The first time I saw this figure, I didn’t know what to think. I’ve always interpreted it as a weary, worried, or maybe even disgusted Christ. I think that the general interpretation, though, is that the figure is in deep thought. In any case, it’s something that I’ve noticed in many places, and usually depicts Christ sitting, with one hand on the lap, the other holding up the head. I have different pieces of folk art, but not this one. I may need to pick one up this time around. Another thing that you see a lot are Jewish musicians. These figures are not meant, in any way, to be demeaning. Jewish and gypsy musicians historically played a huge part in Polish village life. You couldn’t have a wedding without the lively music on fiddles, accordions, and believe it or not, hammered dulcimers. It’s too bad, but we’re just going to miss the annual Festival of Jewish Music and Culture in Kazimierz. We will, though, undoubtedly hear some good gypsy music on the square. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cr4YE_hh4HI
