Krakow-Tyniec Bike Ride, or Water Taxi

We’ve spoken several times about how we would like to do “small” things when we’re on vacation. Sitting for a few hours on the square. Visiting a small exhibit. These are the kinds of things that make Krakow great. With that in mind, a relaxing side trip out of town to see the Benedictine monastery at Tyniec might fit into this same category.

There are a couple of nice ways to get to Tyniec. One is to go on bike via a picturesque path that runs from downtown to the monastery about seven or so miles away. Ewa and I did just that a couple of years ago. It was great fun, and not too strenuous. The other way is one that is new this year: travel by water taxi. While I haven’t tried this, it looks like it would include a lazy trip along the Wisla, through some pleasant countryside. Either way would be great. Once there, honestly, there doesn’t seem to be much to do, making the ride to and from just as much a part of the experience as the actual destination. That being said, the monastery is really pretty and has a history that dates back supposedly to the year 1044. There is a snack shop along with a gift store, as well as a little outside stand at the bottom of the monastery hill, where you can buy pierogi and kielbasy. When Ewa and I were there, we didn’t tour the monastery itself, but I believe that it is possible to do seven days a week, depending on the time you are there. Here are a few links:

I think that they have a scriptorium there. I love illustrated manuscripts. Maybe they have some there.
