Apron Strings, Part 1
It’s inevitable. Even the most adventurous traveler needs a breath of home at some point. Here’s the first of a two-part blog dedicated to keeping in touch with the fabulous fifty.
McDonald’s (Szewska, Florianska)
Okay, maybe not the most fabulous part of the fifty, and quite possibly our worst export ever! Nevertheless, if traveling messes up your system and you find that you absolutely must have that butt-cleansing blast that only McDonald’s can provide, grab a burger at Mickey D’s on Szewska St. or Florianska St., right near the Florian Gate.
Pizza Hut (Podgorska)
Can’t get out of the P’Zone for more than a few days? Head to the Pizza Hut on Podgorska for a slice of home. The only thing missing will be enormous rednecks bellying up to the buffet. Better yet, get a local pie. I love the wood-fired pizza at Cyklop (Cyclops) on Mikolajska Street in the Old Town. https://www.pizzeriacyklop.pl/
US newspapers and magazines
The best bet for news from home is obviously the Internet. However, if you need to go old school and have real ink in front of you, there are several places where you can get American newspapers and magazines. The Sheraton and other hotels are good bets. Also, the Empik bookstore on the main square should fill the bill.
Hard Rock Café
This place is different than the usual ones. I’ve never eaten here, but it doesn’t seem to have the cookie cutter menu that you find at most other Hard Rocks in bigger cities. When I was there, it seemed more oriented to being a bar, though I’m nearly certain that they do serve food. It’s a good place to buy a Hard Rock Krakow t-shirt, and of course they still have rock and roll memorabilia as the main part of the décor. If you can’t live without seeing a leather vest once worn by Paul Stanley of KISS, this is your place!
The Hard Rock Cafe in a building that dates, I'm guessing, to the 14th century. The Empik bookstore stands next to it. Both are on the main square.
SomePlace Else
Also at the Sheraton. I’ve never been here, but it seems like it would do the trick if you need a drink or a Friday’s sort of meal. https://krakow.someplace-else.pl/en
US Consulate (9 Stolarska St.)
Finally, if you’re craving some good old bureaucratic frustration, head on over to the US Consulate (actually, any time I’ve been there they’ve been very nice). They do have a reading room, and I’m pretty sure that it’s air-conditioned. https://krakow.usconsulate.gov/index.html
